Andrographis and Beclomethasone dipropionate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Beclomethasone dipropionate

Beclomethasone dipropionate falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Andrographis interacts with.

Theoretically, andrographis might interfere with the effects of immunosuppressive drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that andrographolide has immunostimulant activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Lab and animal studies hint that andrographis may gently rev up the immune system, while beclomethasone (Qvar, QNASL) works by calming and quieting inflammation in your airways or nasal passages. In theory, an herb that stimulates immune activity could work against what your inhaler or spray is trying to do.

That said, this is a very theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal data, not real patient cases. Beclomethasone also acts mostly right where you spray it, with little reaching the rest of your body, so a big tug-of-war is unlikely. Still, if you rely on this medicine to keep asthma under control, I'd run the andrographis by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Andrographis

What is Andrographis?

Andrographis
  • Common cold and flu symptoms
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Immune support
  • Digestive complaints

Andrographis is a bitter Asian herb traditionally used for colds, flu, and infections, and some studies suggest it may ease cold symptoms and shorten how long they last. The evidence is limited and the quality of studies varies, so it should not replace standard care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (the oral inhaler, sold as Qvar Redihaler) is used for the long-term, preventive treatment of asthma in people 5 years of age and older.
