Doripenem falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Vitamin A interacts with.

Theoretically, taking tetracycline antibiotics with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of pseudotumor cerebri.
Benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) can occur with tetracyclines and with acute or chronic vitamin A toxicity. Case reports suggest that taking tetracyclines and vitamin A concurrently can increase the risk of this condition. Avoid high doses of vitamin A in people taking tetracyclines chronically.

Here's something worth knowing about this combination. The interaction we have on file describes tetracycline antibiotics paired with high-dose vitamin A, and the concern is a rare condition called pseudotumor cerebri (extra pressure inside the skull that can cause headaches, blurred or doubled vision, and nausea). Both certain antibiotics and too much vitamin A have each been linked to it on their own.

One important caveat: doripenem is actually a carbapenem antibiotic, not a tetracycline, so this particular interaction may not really apply to it. On top of that, the evidence is only anecdotal and theoretical. Still, megadoses of vitamin A aren't a great idea for anyone, since it builds up in the body. Food amounts are fine. If you take a high-dose supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
