Water Hemlock and Clopidogrel

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Clopidogrel and Water Hemlock in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Clopidogrel

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Clopidogrel is filed under 7 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates, anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates. Water Hemlock has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being lithium (moderate) — and none of Clopidogrel’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

About Water Hemlock

What is Water Hemlock?

  • Historically misused in folk practice (not recommended)
  • Sometimes confused with edible wild carrots or parsnips
  • No safe medicinal use

Water hemlock is one of the most poisonous plants in North America and is NOT a safe dietary supplement or herbal remedy. Even small amounts can cause violent seizures and death. Never eat, brew, or take any part of this plant, and seek emergency care immediately if exposure is suspected.

Cicuta maculata · Apiaceae · None — this is a toxic plant, not a usable supplement (roots are the most poisonous part) · Not used as a supplement; sometimes mistaken for edible wild plants

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Water Hemlock is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Water Hemlock record says about it on its own.

Water Hemlock: dosing

There is no safe dose of water hemlock. The only appropriate action with this plant is avoidance and, in case of exposure, emergency care.

About Clopidogrel

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Clopidogrel
