Theoretically, concomitant use might result in increased photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the simple version: Maprotiline can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash after time outdoors. Wild carrot contains plant compounds that, at least in theory, can do the same thing. Put them together and you might be a little more prone to that sun reaction than with either one alone.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not something proven in solid human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, it's easy to play it safe: wear sunscreen, cover up, and limit strong midday sun. If you'd like to add wild carrot, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • Maprotiline is used to treat depression, bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods), and anxiety. Maprotiline is in a class of medications called tetracyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed to maintain mental balance.
