Here's the gist for almotriptan (Axert): xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and slows how fast things empty into your intestines. In theory, that gel could slow down how quickly your migraine tablet gets absorbed. For a medicine you take when a headache hits, faster relief usually matters, so a slower start could mean you wait a bit longer to feel better.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber works, not something proven to cause real trouble. The everyday amount of xanthan gum in foods is unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated xanthan gum (like a liquid thickener), a simple fix is to take your almotriptan first and space the xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
