Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can slow how quickly your stomach empties, and in theory it could change how fast a swallowed pill like Effient (prasugrel) gets absorbed. This is a theoretical concern only, based on how fiber behaves, not on real-world reports of problems with this exact combination, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Still, Effient matters a lot, since it helps keep clots from forming after a heart attack or a stent. The easy fix is timing: take your Effient first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having xanthan gum. Small amounts in food are unlikely to matter. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
