Filgrastim falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The concern on file is about xanthan gum's fiber gel slowing down how the gut absorbs oral medicines. Filgrastim (Neupogen) isn't an oral drug at all. It's given as an injection, either under the skin or into a vein, so it bypasses your stomach and intestines completely.

That means the gel-forming, gut-slowing effect of xanthan gum really has no path to interfere with how filgrastim works in your body. This interaction note is theoretical to begin with, and it simply doesn't apply to a shot. If you're using xanthan gum (often to thicken liquids), that's a separate issue worth mentioning to your pharmacist or oncology team, but it shouldn't change your filgrastim.

About Filgrastim Injection

What Is Filgrastim Injection Used For?

Brand name: Neupogen

Filgrastim injection (available as Neupogen, Nivestym, and Releuko) is used to lower the risk of serious infection in people whose white blood cell counts drop dangerously low. This can happen during chemotherapy for cancer, during treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or after bone marrow transplantation. It is also used to help move stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream so they can be collected for transplantation.

In addition, filgrastim is used long-term to reduce infections in people with severe chronic neutropenia — including congenital neutropenia, cyclic neutropenia, and idiopathic neutropenia. Neupogen is also indicated to increase survival in patients acutely exposed to radiation doses that suppress the bone marrow (Hematopoietic Syndrome of Acute Radiation Syndrome).
