Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. Here's the gist with lesinurad (Zurampic) and xanthan gum. Because xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel and slows how fast your stomach empties, it could in theory change how much lesinurad your body absorbs if the two are taken at the same time. Lesinurad is the active drug itself, not a prodrug, so the main concern is simply absorbing a bit less or a bit slower, which could make it slightly less effective at lowering your uric acid.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber behaves, not from real-world reports. To play it safe, a simple spacing trick helps: take your lesinurad first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. As always, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
