Naloxegol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: Naloxegol (Movantik) needs to be absorbed from your gut to work, and it actually works best when you take it on an empty stomach. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel and can slow how fast things move through your stomach. In theory, that gel could trap a little of the Naloxegol or slow it down, so less of it gets absorbed when you need it.

If that happened, you might notice your opioid-related constipation isn't relieved as well. To be safe, a good habit is to keep them apart, taking xanthan gum roughly 30 to 60 minutes after your Naloxegol. This concern is only theoretical, so check with your pharmacist if you use xanthan gum regularly.

What Is Naloxegol Used For?

Brand name: Movantik

Movantik (naloxegol) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults who have chronic non-cancer pain. It is also approved for adults with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they don't need frequent (roughly weekly) increases in their opioid dose.

It is not indicated for constipation from other causes, and it is not approved for use in children.
