Pegaptanib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The concern on file is that xanthan gum, being a thick soluble fiber, can slow your stomach from emptying and change how oral pills get absorbed. But Pegaptanib (Macugen) isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an injection directly into the eye by your doctor, so it never touches your stomach or intestines at all.

Because of that, eating or drinking foods thickened with xanthan gum shouldn't affect how well your Macugen works for your wet AMD. This particular warning really applies to medicines you take by mouth. If you ever do take oral medications too, a simple tip is to take them about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. When in doubt, just check with your pharmacist.

What Is Pegaptanib Injection Used For?

  • Pegaptanib injection is used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD; an ongoing disease of the eye that causes loss of the ability to see straight ahead and may make it more difficult to read, drive, or perform other daily activities). Pegaptanib injection is in a class of medications called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists. It works by stopping abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye(s) that may cause vision loss in people with wet AMD.
