Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The concern on file is that coffee charcoal, like other charcoal-type products, can grab onto medicines in your stomach and keep them from being absorbed. That only matters for drugs you swallow. Pegaptanib (Macugen) isn't a pill, it's given as an injection straight into the eye by your eye doctor, so it never passes through your gut where the charcoal sits.

Because the two don't meet in the digestive tract, coffee charcoal shouldn't lower how well your pegaptanib works for your wet AMD. This interaction was written for oral drugs in general. Still, it's always smart to keep your pharmacist updated on any supplements you take.

What Is Pegaptanib Injection Used For?

Brand name: Macugen

  • Pegaptanib injection is used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD; an ongoing disease of the eye that causes loss of the ability to see straight ahead and may make it more difficult to read, drive, or perform other daily activities). Pegaptanib injection is in a class of medications called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists. It works by stopping abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye(s) that may cause vision loss in people with wet AMD.
