Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The interaction we have on file applies to oral medications, where guar gum's thick gel can grab onto a drug in your stomach and slow how much gets absorbed. Pegaptanib (Macugen) is not swallowed. Your eye doctor injects it directly into the eye to treat wet macular degeneration, so it never travels through your digestive tract.

Because guar gum and this medication never meet in the gut, the fiber shouldn't change how well your injections work. If you take guar gum supplements for cholesterol or blood sugar, that's a separate conversation worth having with your pharmacist, but it won't interfere with your Macugen treatments.

What Is Pegaptanib Injection Used For?

Brand name: Macugen

  • Pegaptanib injection is used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD; an ongoing disease of the eye that causes loss of the ability to see straight ahead and may make it more difficult to read, drive, or perform other daily activities). Pegaptanib injection is in a class of medications called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists. It works by stopping abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye(s) that may cause vision loss in people with wet AMD.
