Why this applies to Pirfenidone

Pirfenidone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Zizyphus interacts with.

Theoretically, zizyphus might decrease the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal research shows that zizyphus induces CYP1A2 enzymes. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break down pirfenidone (Esbriet). Lab and animal studies hint that zizyphus may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, your body could clear pirfenidone a little faster, which might lower its levels and make it work less well at slowing the lung scarring it's meant to treat.

Now the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal data, and it hasn't actually been seen in humans. Eating a few jujube fruits as food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplement doses are the bigger question mark. Since pirfenidone is an important medication, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a zizyphus supplement.

Pirfenidone — available as capsules and tablets under the brand name Esbriet, as well as generic pirfenidone products — is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic, progressive disease in which scar tissue builds up in the lungs and makes breathing increasingly difficult.

Esbriet capsules and tablets, pirfenidone capsules, and pirfenidone tablets are each specifically approved for IPF. No other uses are supported by the available product labels.
