What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

7-keto-dhea: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

7-keto-DHEA is a lab-made metabolite of the hormone DHEA that is marketed mainly for weight loss and a faster metabolism. Unlike DHEA, it is not thought to convert into estrogen or testosterone, but the evidence that it helps with weight or metabolism is limited and comes from small studies. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have any health conditions.

Overview

7-keto-DHEA (also called 7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a substance your body naturally makes from DHEA, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The supplement version is made in a laboratory, not taken from a plant.

It is sold as a dietary supplement, most often in capsules or tablets. People take it mainly hoping to lose weight, burn fat, or speed up their metabolism. It is sometimes added to combination products marketed for body shaping or athletic performance.

One reason 7-keto-DHEA became popular is that, unlike plain DHEA, it is not believed to turn into the sex hormones estrogen or testosterone in the body. This led to the idea that it may carry fewer hormone-related risks, though this does not mean it is proven safe or effective.

How it works

7-keto-DHEA is a natural breakdown product (metabolite) of DHEA. Researchers think it may increase the activity of certain enzymes involved in heat production and fat burning, a process called thermogenesis. This is the main proposed way it might affect metabolism.

It is also thought to not convert into estrogen or testosterone and to not activate androgen receptors, which is why it is marketed as a 'non-hormonal' option compared with DHEA. Some lab studies suggest possible antioxidant effects as well.

It is important to know that much of this is based on laboratory and animal research, or on small human studies. The exact way 7-keto-DHEA acts in the human body, and whether these effects are meaningful, is still not well understood.

Safety & precautions

In the small, short-term studies done so far, 7-keto-DHEA has generally been tolerated. But its long-term safety is not well studied, and we do not know how it affects people who use it for many months or years.

People with hormone-sensitive conditions, liver or kidney problems, heart conditions, or thyroid issues should be especially cautious and check with a healthcare provider first. Because it is related to a hormone, anyone with a history of hormone-related cancers should avoid it unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough safety information for these situations. Because it is a hormone-related product, it is best to avoid 7-keto-DHEA if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Supplements are not tightly regulated, so the actual amount in a product may differ from the label, and some products contain hidden or extra ingredients. Choose products from reputable companies and talk with your pharmacist.

Side effects

Reported side effects from short-term studies have been generally mild and may include things like upset stomach, dizziness, or trouble sleeping. Some people may notice changes in energy or mood.

Because it is related to a hormone, there is a theoretical concern about effects on the body's hormone system, even though it is marketed as non-hormonal. Serious side effects have not been clearly documented in the limited research, but the absence of reports is not the same as proof of safety.

Stop the supplement and contact a healthcare provider if you notice any unusual or troubling symptoms.

Dosing

There is no official or well-established standardized dose for 7-keto-DHEA. Doses used in studies and on product labels have varied, and we cannot recommend a specific amount.

If you choose to use it, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. Because needs and risks differ from person to person, it is best to check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take other medicines or have health conditions.
