What’s inside
Full disclosure
This tablet has 2 active ingredients: vitamin B12 and folate (as 5-MTHF). Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve function, energy production, and healthy red blood cells.
Folate is a B vitamin your body needs for DNA synthesis and cell division. The product also contains inactive ingredients — xylitol (sweetener), ascorbyl palmitate, silica, and natural cherry flavor — that make up the tablet but don't contribute to its main effects.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B12 is effective for treating B12 deficiency and Imerslund-Grasbeck disease (a rare inherited condition that prevents B12 absorption). It's also likely effective for cyanide poisoning and possibly effective for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles).
We don't hold effectiveness data for folate in our system, so we can't speak to how well it works for any particular condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin B12 is generally very well tolerated. Your body removes excess B12 in your urine, so there's no established upper limit for how much you can take.
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, redness, hives) are rare but possible and may theoretically be linked to the cobalt in the B12 molecule. With injection forms, injection site reactions occur most commonly; when correcting severe anemia, a very rare serious drop in potassium (low blood potassium) has been reported.
Vitamin B12 is needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is considered safe at recommended amounts — follow your healthcare provider's guidance. We don't have safety data on file for folate in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
The only documented interaction is with metformin (Glucophage), a diabetes medication — it can lower your B12 levels, which is Minor severity. We couldn't check folate, so if you take any medications, use the search tool on this page to be thorough.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This product works well for people with B12 deficiency or those at risk for it, especially if you take metformin — though that interaction is minor. Anyone can take it, but if you're on any prescription medications, check them against our tool first.
Talk with your pharmacist before starting, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take diabetes medication.
