- HOW IT WORKS: Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) is a naturally occurring substance that is necessary for the utilization of fats for energy. ALC's primary function is to chaperone fatty acid molecules into the mitochondria so that they can be converted into ATP, the form of chemical energy used by cells. In addition to fatty acid metabolism, ALC is critical for the maintenance of membrane structures, indirectly participating in the efficiency of signaling mechanisms. Another function of ALC is to assist in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in learning and memory. Numerous scientific studies have found that ALC is especially important for the healthy function of brain and neuronal tissues, by providing protection for these structures, as well as through its ability to support optimal neurotransmitter activity.
