Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
Natural Nutra Acidophilus is a single-ingredient supplement: Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live bacterial culture that's one of the well-known probiotics. The capsule also contains whey, magnesium stearate, and the capsule material itself as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The research on L. acidophilus shows mixed but promising results. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (like eczema and allergies), and for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) the evidence is too limited to rate. So whether it'll help your specific situation depends on what you're dealing with — talk to your pharmacist or doctor about whether the data supports it for your needs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The main caution is that because it's a live microorganism, there's a small theoretical risk of infection in certain patients — documented cases are rare and usually involve people whose immune systems or gut lining may already be compromised.
When taken by mouth, some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea, but these are uncommon. In one trial, a combination probiotic including L. acidophilus was linked to rash and itching in a couple of participants, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus itself was responsible.
Because the safety data are limited, check with your doctor before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, separate them from this supplement — antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the product and make it less effective. This is a Moderate interaction affecting 182 individual medications in the antibiotic class.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and a few other digestive or bacterial issues, though the evidence is still developing. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to time this supplement separately to keep it effective.
It's generally safe for most people, but ask your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
