Meropenem, Vaborbactam falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in one direction. Vabomere (meropenem and vaborbactam) is a powerful antibiotic given by IV, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live, friendly bacterium. If your antibiotic is circulating at the same time, it can wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic you just took, so you mostly waste it. Your Vabomere keeps working fine either way, so there's no danger here, just lost benefit from the probiotic.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not a proven problem. If you're using acidophilus to settle your gut, simple fix: space it out by at least two hours from your antibiotic, and check with your pharmacist if you have any immune concerns.

What Is Meropenem and Vaborbactam Injection Used For?

  • Meropenem and vaborbactam injection is used to treat serious urinary tract infections, including kidney infections, that are caused by bacteria. Meropenem is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Vaborbactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying meropenem.

  • Antibiotics such as meropenem and vaborbactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
