What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Advanced Eye Health against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Advanced Eye Health contains 5 active ingredients: Omega-3 Fatty Acids (broken down into Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid), Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Polyunsaturated Fat. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids — plant pigments that concentrate in the eye and are thought to protect the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision.
The omega-3s are long-chain fatty acids commonly associated with eye and heart health. The softgels also contain inactive ingredients including fish oil, gelatin, glycerin, beeswax, and food colorants to hold the formula together and deliver it.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, according to the evidence we have on file. Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD.
For other conditions listed — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and some neurological or immune conditions — the evidence either suggests these ingredients don't work or isn't reliable enough to say. The omega-3 ingredients in this product and their effectiveness aren't rated in our data, so we can't speak to what they do or don't do here.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are both rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation. At typical supplement doses, Lutein is generally well tolerated — studies have tested doses up to 20 mg daily without adverse effects.
Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at standard amounts. That said, the safety data on higher or concentrated supplement doses during pregnancy or breastfeeding isn't as robust as the food-source data, so if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs, double-check this product before you start — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar. For other medications, use the search tool on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Advanced Eye Health may be worth considering if you're concerned about macular degeneration or cataracts — the lutein and zeaxanthin have some evidence behind them. If you take antidiabetes medication, check with us first using the tool on this page to make sure zeaxanthin won't affect your blood sugar control.

Advanced Eye Health by Smart Sense Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Advanced Eye Health by Smart Sense contains ingredients that interact with medications.
Zeaxanthin, one of its active components, may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken with antidiabetes drugs — this is a Moderate severity interaction. The effect is theoretical based on animal studies showing zeaxanthin can lower blood sugar, though real-world data on people taking diabetes medication hasn't confirmed a clear risk.

Lutein, another active ingredient, was checked and shows no documented interactions with medications. We were unable to check three other ingredients — Eicosapentaenoic Acid, Docosahexaenoic Acid, and Polyunsaturated Fat — because we hold no interaction data for them.
Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications. If you take any antidiabetes drug, or if you're on other prescriptions, use the medication checker on this page to see if Advanced Eye Health affects your specific drugs.

For each ingredient in Advanced Eye Health with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
