Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (alpha-GPC), a compound that naturally occurs in the brain and is involved in cell membrane function and signaling. The capsule also holds gelatin, cellulose, and silica as inactive ingredients (binders and capsule material).

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support choline levels and acetylcholine.
  • We looked for evidence on: Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Vascular dementia, Memory, Age-related cognitive decline.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Alpha-gpc is rated "Possibly Effective" for Alzheimer disease (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Alpha-gpc is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cognitive function, Vascular dementia.

Alpha-GPC is possibly effective for Alzheimer disease based on the evidence we hold. For brain tumors, cognitive function, vascular dementia, and stroke, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it one way or the other — we simply don't have reliable data yet to say whether it works for those uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Alpha-GPC is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety hasn't been fully established. Rarely, people taking it by mouth have reported dizziness, headache, insomnia, excitation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.

Very rarely, oral alpha-GPC has been associated with stroke, especially with use for at least 2 months or longer compared with non-users or shorter-term users. Safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't on file — there's not enough information to know either way.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Scopolamine (Transderm Scop)

Theoretically, alpha-GPC might decrease the effects of scopolamine.
A small clinical study shows that alpha-GPC can partially counteract the attention and memory impairment effects caused by scopolamine given intramuscularly. Whether alpha-GPC can decrease the beneficial anti-motion sickness effects of the scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop) is unclear.
