HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Anxiety Soother Orange by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Anxiety Soother Orange contains five active ingredients. Lavender extract is traditionally used for relaxation; kava extract is meant to ease anxiety but carries significant safety concerns; Albizia extract (from the Albizia tree) is used in herbal anxiety blends; bacopa extract is a traditional herbal ingredient sometimes used to support mental clarity; and passionflower extract is included for its calming properties.
The product also contains inactive ingredients — cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin, and sweet orange essential oil — which serve as preservatives, solvents, and flavoring.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Passionflower has possibly effective ratings for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety, and lavender is rated possibly effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea).
Kava, however, is rated possibly ineffective for generalized anxiety disorder — the very condition many people buy it to treat. For the other ingredients and most of the other purported uses, the evidence we hold rates them as insufficient — meaning we don't have solid proof they work for those purposes.
Talk with your pharmacist about what you're trying to address and whether any of these ingredients have evidence backing their use for your specific concern.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Kava is the major safety red flag here. It's been linked to over 100 cases of liver injury worldwide, some serious, and in susceptible people symptoms can show up after just 3 to 4 weeks.
Kava is not safe in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding. Lavender is generally well tolerated in oral forms, though the essential oil is toxic if swallowed and can irritate skin; the most common side effects are breath odor, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, and headache.
Passionflower can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion. Bacopa is generally well tolerated but commonly causes gastrointestinal upset — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, and nausea — in 12 to 30% of people in studies, and can also cause drowsiness or insomnia.
Albizia has limited human safety data. None of these ingredients have enough safety information for pregnancy or breastfeeding; avoid this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check any CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, pain relievers that make you drowsy) — kava has a Major interaction and the other ingredients add Moderate risk. Also check medications metabolized by liver enzymes CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP2E1, CYP1A2, and CYP3A4, and any drugs that carry liver toxicity risk.
If you take haloperidol (Haldol) or ropinirole (Requip), do not use this product without talking to your doctor.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product combines multiple ingredients that depress your central nervous system, so if you take any sedating medications — including sleep aids, narcotic pain relievers, or benzodiazepines — you need to check with your pharmacist or doctor first. Kava's liver safety concerns and its Major interaction with CNS depressants make this especially important.
If you're on any prescription medications at all, run them through the interaction checker below before you start.

Anxiety Soother Orange by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Anxiety Soother Orange by Herb Pharm contains five active ingredients, and several of them interact with medications — some seriously.
The most pressing concern is kava extract, which has a Major interaction with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, pain relievers that make you drowsy). Combining kava with these drugs can dangerously increase drowsiness and slow your reflexes.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Kava also interacts at Moderate severity with drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP2C19, CYP2C9, and CYP2E1 enzymes — including certain blood thinners, some antidepressants, and other common medications — potentially raising their levels in your blood. There's also a Moderate concern with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can damage the liver), since kava itself has been linked to rare but serious liver injury.
Two specific drugs — haloperidol (Haldol, an antipsychotic) and ropinirole (Requip, for Parkinson's) — have reported cases of serious adverse effects when combined with kava.
Lavender, Albizia, bacopa, and passionflower each interact at Moderate severity with CNS depressants, adding to that risk if you're already on sedating medications. Bacopa also affects several liver enzyme systems (CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4 substrates) at Moderate severity, and it can theoretically interfere with anticholinergic and cholinergic drugs.
Passionflower carries Minor interactions with CYP3A4 substrates and certain transporter proteins.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,258 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions with the tool below before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Anxiety Soother Orange with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Kava extract
Cns Depressants
Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.
Alcohol (Ethanol)
Combining kava with alcohol may increase the risk of sedation and/or hepatotoxicity.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Additionally, kava has been associated with over 100 cases of hepatotoxicity. There is some concern that kava can adversely affect the liver, especially when used in combination with hepatotoxic drugs. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that alcohol not be used with kava.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Kava might increase levels of CYP2E1 substrates.
In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days inhibited the metabolism of CYP2E1 substrates.
Haloperidol (Haldol)
Combining kava and haloperidol might increase the risk of cardiovascular adverse effects and hypoxia.
Atrial flutter and hypoxia has been reported for a patient who received intramuscular injections of haloperidol and lorazepam after using kava orally. The side effects were attributed to kava-induced inhibition of CYP2D6, but might also have been related to additive adverse effects with the concomitant use of haloperidol, lorazepam, and kava.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, using kava with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
Kava has been linked with over 100 cases of hepatotoxicity. Most cases occur with excessive and prolonged use. There is some concern that kava can adversely affect the liver, especially when used in combination with hepatotoxic drugs.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
It is unclear if kava inhibits P-glycoprotein (P-gp); research is conflicting.
In vitro research shows that kava can inhibit P-gp efflux. However, a clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking kava standardized to provide 225 mg kavalactones daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of digoxin, a P-gp substrate. It is possible that the use of other P-gp substrates or higher doses of kava might still inhibit P-gp.
Ropinirole (Requip)
Taking kava with ropinirole might increase the risk for dopaminergic toxicity.
A case of visual hallucinations and paranoid delusions has been reported for a patient who used kava in combination with ropinirole. The adverse effects were attributed to kava-induced inhibition of CYP1A2, which may have reduced the metabolism of ropinirole, resulting in excessive dopaminergic stimulation.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP1A2; research is conflicting.
Although in vitro research and a case report suggest that kava inhibits CYP1A2, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP1A2. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP1A2 activity.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP1A2; research is conflicting.
In vitro research shows that kava extract significantly inhibits CYP2D6. However, clinical research shows that kava does not affect the metabolism of CYP2D6 substrates in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP3AA; research is conflicting.
Although in vitro research suggests that kava inhibits CYP3A4, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP3A4. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP3A4 activity.
Bacopa extract
Anticholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Cevimeline (Evoxac)
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.
Passionflower extract
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
Lavender extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
Albizia extract
Cns Depressants
Animal research suggests that certain constituents from Albizia julibrissin flowers can potentiate pentobarbital-induced sleeping time in mice. Theoretically, Albizia julibrissin might enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Some CNS depressants include pentobarbital (Nembutal), phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.
