Artichoke Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Artichoke against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Artichoke by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient, artichoke leaf extract, made from the artichoke plant. The inactive ingredients are cane alcohol and distilled water, which are the carrier components of the liquid.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Artichoke leaf extract is rated possibly effective for hyperlipidemia (high levels of fats in the blood) and for dyspepsia (indigestion). For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effect, so that benefit is not established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The product is generally well tolerated as a food and short-term supplement, though quality and dosing vary by product. Common side effects taken orally include abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, hunger, and nausea.
Rare but serious reactions, including anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), have been reported in people sensitive to artichoke inulin, and people sensitive to ragweed, daisies, or marigolds may be at greatest risk of allergic reactions. Our safety notes advise avoiding this supplement form during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety information, and they say breastfeeding safety has not been established, so it is best avoided.
Please talk with your own doctor or pharmacist about your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medicines) and antidiabetes drugs (diabetes medicines), both rated Moderate. Also review drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 (liver enzymes), also rated Moderate.
Confirm any of these with your own doctor or pharmacist before combining them with this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you are looking into artichoke for cholesterol or indigestion, the possibly effective ratings may be worth a conversation with your doctor. If you take blood pressure or diabetes medicines, be careful and check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your own healthcare provider before considering this product.

Artichoke by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Artichoke liquid can interact with several medications through its artichoke leaf extract, its only active ingredient.
The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate and involves antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medicines). Artichoke may increase the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension) when taken with them, and a small clinical meta-analysis found it modestly lowered blood pressure compared with placebo.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The extract may also raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) with antidiabetes drugs (diabetes medicines), a Moderate concern. It may increase levels of drugs cleared by the liver enzymes CYP2C19 and CYP2B6, also rated Moderate.
Lab research shows the extract inhibits both enzymes, but that effect has not been reported in humans. Altogether, these interactions span 364 individual medications.
Because not every medication is listed, use the search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions, and talk with your own doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
