They're less well studied, and caution is advised. Allergic reactions are possible, especially if you're sensitive to onion, garlic, leek, or chive (they're in the same plant family).
Symptoms can range from itchy eyes and a runny nose to hives, trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, and in rare cases, anaphylaxis. One clinical trial of a combination product containing asparagus root reported constipation, belly bloating and pain, nausea, dry mouth, and gallbladder complaints in up to half the people — though it's unclear whether asparagus root, the other ingredient (parsley), or both caused them.
That same trial saw gout develop in about 2% of participants.
