What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a carotenoid (a plant pigment) at 10 mg per softgel. It's combined with inactive ingredients — sunflower seed oil, gelatin, and glycerin — that help form and deliver the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for astaxanthin is thin. We don't have reliable data to say whether it works for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
More research is needed before we can rate its effectiveness for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
In trials, a 6 mg dose caused increased bowel movements and red stools in a small number of participants; a much higher 40 mg dose caused severe stomach pain in two patients. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if either applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any medications your liver metabolizes using CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes before taking this product — astaxanthin may lower their levels. Many common heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, mental health, and seizure medications use these pathways; the search tool on this page can help you verify your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid supplement with limited evidence for the conditions it's marketed for. If you take medications broken down by your liver — especially heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, mental health, or seizure drugs — check them against our interaction tool first.
Otherwise, talk to your pharmacist before starting.

Astaxanthin 10 mg by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 10 mg by Puritan's Pride may interact with medications your liver breaks down.
The main concern is with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes — astaxanthin appears to speed up how your liver processes these medications, which could lower their levels in your blood. Lab research shows this effect, but it hasn't been confirmed in people yet, so we're flagging it as a theoretical risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications. Because that's a large number, the search tool on this page is your best bet to check your specific prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs — especially any you take regularly for heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, mental health, or seizures, since many of those are metabolized this way.
If you take any medications processed through these liver pathways, run them through the checker before you start astaxanthin. Your pharmacist can help you figure out whether the timing or dose needs adjusting.
