Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: vitamin B12 at 500 mcg per tablet. B12 is an essential vitamin your body needs for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients—lactose, resin, cellulose, and calcium stearate—which are fillers and binders that help hold the pill together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B12 is effective for treating B12 deficiency and Imerslund-Grasbeck disease (a rare genetic disorder affecting B12 absorption). It's also likely effective for cyanide poisoning.
The evidence supports it as possibly effective for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (a type of nerve pain that follows shingles), though the data for those uses is less robust.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
B12 is generally very well tolerated when taken by mouth. Your body excretes excess B12 in urine, so there's no established upper safe limit.
Most people have no adverse effects at all. Allergic reactions like rash or itching are rare but can occur; they've been theoretically linked to the cobalt in the B12 molecule, and one case of contact dermatitis was reported in someone with a cobalt allergy.
B12 is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended doses; it's actually needed during both, so talk with your provider about the right amount for you.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take metformin (Glucophage) for diabetes, let your pharmacist know—metformin can lower B12 levels, so you may need monitoring. Use the medication checker below to verify your other drugs; we don't have interaction data for all medications, but the ones we do are listed there.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is a straightforward, single-ingredient B12 tablet suitable for anyone with a B12 deficiency or Imerslund-Grasbeck disease. If you take metformin for diabetes, mention this supplement to your pharmacist so they can monitor your B12 levels.
