Bee Natural Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Bee Natural against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Partial disclosure
Bee Natural contains four active ingredients: honey, propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly. Honey is the bee product most studied for medicinal use and appears to have mild antimicrobial and wound-healing properties.
Propolis is a resinous mixture bees make to seal their hives and has been researched for immune support. Bee pollen is collected pollen mixed with nectar and bee secretions, and royal jelly is a secretion worker bees produce to feed the queen.
The product also includes inactive ingredients: silica, vegetable stearine, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Honey shows possibly effective evidence for cold sores, cough, oral mucositis (mouth sores from cancer treatment), burns, and dry eye. Propolis is possibly effective for oral mucositis, cold sores, and diabetes, though evidence for dengue fever is insufficient.
Bee pollen evidence is scarce—it appears possibly ineffective for athletic performance and hay fever, and insufficient data exist for its use in other conditions. Royal jelly is possibly effective for menopausal symptoms but appears possibly ineffective for hay fever, athletic performance, and diabetes; evidence for hair loss is insufficient.
Overall, the strongest data exist for honey and propolis in wound and mouth care.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Honey is generally well tolerated as a food for anyone over 1 year old. When used medicinally, check with your doctor first.
Propolis is well tolerated short-term but allergic reactions are possible, especially in people sensitive to bee products; it's best avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Bee pollen is tolerated by most but can trigger allergic reactions ranging from mild to severe, including anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals; it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Royal jelly is also generally well tolerated but can cause severe allergies—particularly shortness of breath, swelling, and anaphylaxis—in people with asthma or atopy (a tendency to allergic conditions); avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding. All four ingredients carry a small risk of allergic reactions in people sensitive to bee products.
Common side effects from honey include nausea and stomach upset; propolis may cause headache; bee pollen and royal jelly can trigger itching, hives, or swelling in sensitive individuals.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take any of these: blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel)—propolis, honey, bee pollen, and royal jelly all raise bleeding risk; blood pressure medications (antihypertensives)—royal jelly may lower blood pressure further; anticonvulsants like phenytoin (Dilantin)—honey may raise levels; or any drug processed by your liver, including beta-blockers, antidepressants, and many others—propolis and honey may affect how your liver clears them. No interactions are documented for the inactive ingredients in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bee Natural may appeal to you if you're looking for a honey-based product for cough, cold sores, or mouth sores, supported by possibly effective evidence. However, if you take blood thinners like warfarin, a beta-blocker, an anticonvulsant, or medications broken down by your liver, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product—the ingredients carry real interaction risks.
If you have a history of allergies to bee products, asthma, or seasonal pollen allergies, talk with your healthcare provider first, as serious allergic reactions are possible.

Bee Natural by Essante Organics Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bee Natural by Essante Organics contains four active ingredients—honey, propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly—that together carry documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is propolis and its potential to affect blood thinners (anticoagulants), particularly warfarin: at high doses, propolis may decrease warfarin's effectiveness, which could reduce its ability to prevent clots. Altogether, these interactions span 1,037 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Honey and propolis both interact with drugs processed through several liver pathways (cytochrome P450 enzymes). Propolis presents Moderate-severity concerns with five different enzyme systems; the effects are mostly theoretical but based on lab research.
Honey may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 (Minor severity), though study results conflict. Honey also carries a Moderate risk with phenytoin (an anticonvulsant): animal data suggests honey might raise its levels, though this hasn't been observed in humans.
Both honey and propolis pose Minor to Moderate bleeding risks with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel.
Bee pollen and royal jelly both interact with warfarin at Moderate severity. A case report showed bee pollen raised one patient's warfarin levels significantly after a month of use.
Royal jelly carries an additional Moderate interaction with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), as animal evidence hints it may lower blood pressure. Royal jelly may also increase bleeding risk with warfarin—one case report documented elevated INR after one week of use.
To check whether this product conflicts with your specific medications, use the interaction checker on this page or talk with your pharmacist before starting it.

For each ingredient in Bee Natural with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Propolis
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP1A2. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP1A2 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP1A2 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C9. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C9 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C9 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, propolis might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
In vitro research shows that propolis can inhibit CYP2E1. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, propolis might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Animal research shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases the international normalized ratio (INR). This effect has not been reported in humans.
Honey
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Theoretically, honey might increase levels of phenytoin.
In an animal model, the rate and extent of absorption of phenytoin was increased by honey. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, honey may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, honey inhibits platelet aggregation and increases the time to clotting. Furthermore, animal research suggests that feeding mice large doses of honey for 12 days increases bleeding time when compared with no intervention. However, these effects have not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, honey might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, but research is conflicting.
Some clinical research shows that honey induces CYP3A4. However, other clinical studies found no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Different honey preparations may have different effects on CYP3A4.
Royal Jelly
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, royal jelly might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that royal jelly might lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Royal jelly might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
In one case, an 87-year-old male who was previously stabilized on warfarin developed hematuria and was found to have an INR of 7.29 after taking a royal jelly supplement for one week.
Bee Pollen
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is some concern that bee pollen might interact with warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding.
In one case report, a patient on warfarin had a stable international normalized ratio (INR) of 1.9-3.3 for 9 months. The patient's INR was found to be 7.1 after starting bee pollen granules one teaspoon twice daily for approximately one month. The patient's warfarin dose was decreased by approximately 11% in order to return the INR to the therapeutic range while continuing the bee pollen supplement.
