HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Beet Root Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: beet root extract, dry. Beet root is the source of the compounds studied in the research behind this product, including betanin, the pigment linked to the enzyme interactions above.
The inactive ingredients listed are glycerin and water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Beet has a Possibly Effective rating for athletic performance and for exercise-induced muscle soreness. It has a Possibly Ineffective rating for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The evidence is insufficient to rate it for dyslipidemia (high blood fats) and for cognitive function, meaning the reliable evidence isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beet as a food is widely eaten and is generally well tolerated for most adults. Concentrated supplements, however, lack safety data, so caution is advised.
The most common side effects are red stools and red urine, which are not harmful. Black stools have also been reported.
In one case, a 79-year-old man taking apixaban and clopidogrel (blood thinners) developed black stools, nausea, and vomiting after taking beet pills. The likelihood of an upper gastrointestinal bleed was judged low in that case.
Rarely, large amounts have been linked to low blood calcium (hypocalcemia) and kidney damage. We do not have pregnancy data for this ingredient, and the lactation (breastfeeding) entry has no rating on file, so there isn't enough data to know either way.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check medication types that are cleared by the CYP3A4 enzyme (Moderate), then antihypertensive drugs (Minor) and CYP1A2 substrates (Minor). Your own doctor or pharmacist can confirm whether any of these apply to you.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Beet root extract may be of interest to adults looking at beet for athletic performance or muscle soreness, where the rating is Possibly Effective. If you take medications that your liver clears through CYP3A4, take blood pressure medicines, or take blood thinners, be careful and review the details with your own doctor or pharmacist before using this product.

Beet Root Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Beet Root Alcohol Free does interact with some medications, through its beet root extract (dry).
The most serious interaction is rated Moderate and involves drugs your liver clears using the CYP3A4 enzyme (CYP3A4 substrates). Beet may increase the levels of these drugs, and lab research suggests its main pigment, betanin, can block this enzyme in a way similar to the strong inhibitor ketoconazole.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Two lower-severity interactions also apply. Beet contains nitrates, which can widen blood vessels and may lower blood pressure, so antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medicines) carry a Minor rating.
A study using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant effect on blood pressure or heart rate. Beet is also rated Minor for drugs cleared through the CYP1A2 enzyme (CYP1A2 substrates).
It may decrease their levels and effects, and lab research suggests beet induces this enzyme.
Altogether, these interactions span 864 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to check your exact medications, and talk the results over with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.

For each ingredient in Beet Root Alcohol Free with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Beet Root Extract, Dry
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Beet and beetroot contain nitrates, which can cause vasodilation, potentially leading to lower blood pressure. However, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant impact on blood pressure or heart rate in different age groups. Other small clinical studies suggest that while beet consumption might transiently lower blood pressure due to vessel dilation, there's no consistent evidence of a lasting effect. Overall, the theoretical risk of reduced blood pressure due to beet's nitrate content exists, but studies generally indicate a low and temporary impact rather than a sustained decrease.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
