Bergamot extract appears possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) based on available evidence. For mental alertness, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.

The oral extract appears generally well tolerated in the short term — one person in a clinical trial reported heartburn. The essential oil, though, can be toxic if swallowed and causes sun-related skin reactions, so stick with the extract form and take it by mouth, not on your skin.
Topically, bergamot is possibly unsafe and can cause blisters, redness, photosensitivity, pigment spots, pustules, and skin lesions, especially in fair-skinned people. The safety data advises against using bergamot during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
