Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 6 of its 6 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This powder contains 6 active ingredients: four peptide-based branch-chain amino acids (Glycyl-Alanyl-Lysine-L-Leucine, Glycyl-Alanyl-Lysine-L-Isoleucine, Glycyl-Alanyl-Lysine-L-Valine, and Glycyl-Alanyl-Lysine-L-Citrulline), plus L-carnitine — a compound your body makes that helps turn fat into energy — and Grains of Paradise, a spice used traditionally for flavor and potential wellness purposes. The rest is inactive ingredients: binders, sweeteners (sucralose and acesulfame-K), maltodextrin, flavoring, citric acid, malic acid, silica, and FD&C Red No.

Insufficient evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Insufficient

There isn't enough reliable clinical evidence to rate this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: lean muscle recovery and daily performance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Exercise-induced muscle damage, Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Athletic performance, Sarcopenia, Cachexia, muscle protein synthesis — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: L-carnitine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: L-carnitine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cachexia, Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Sarcopenia, Exercise-induced muscle damage.

L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency (a real metabolic condition) and possibly effective for high cholesterol, congestive heart failure, and angina. The evidence supporting those uses is mixed.

The other four amino acid ingredients and Grains of Paradise don't have established effectiveness ratings in our data, so we can't speak to what they do in this formulation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though high doses can cause stomach upset — nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, heartburn, and vomiting are the most common side effects. Some people report a fishy body odor.

Rarely, seizures have been reported. We don't hold enough safety data on L-carnitine during pregnancy to say whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

It's possibly safe while breastfeeding, though the data is limited. Grains of Paradise is likely safe in food amounts, but supplement safety isn't well studied.

The safety data advises against it during pregnancy, and there isn't enough information to consider it safe while breastfeeding. We hold no adverse-effect data for the four peptide amino acids.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 2 matched ingredients can interact with medications — L-carnitine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 19 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you use warfarin or acenocoumarol (blood thinners) — L-carnitine may increase their effects. Also check if you're on thyroid hormone replacement, since L-carnitine may reduce its effectiveness.

L-Carnitine3 drug types · 19 drugs

Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Likelihood Probable Evidence B
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.

Best BCAA Shredded Fruit Punch by BPI Sports: Common Questions

Does Best BCAA Shredded Fruit Punch by BPI Sports interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Best BCAA Shredded Fruit Punch has a known interaction with 19 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Best BCAA Shredded Fruit Punch contains 6 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What does L-carnitine actually do?
L-carnitine is a compound your body naturally makes that helps convert fat into energy. It's effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency and possibly helpful for high cholesterol, heart failure, and chest pain, though the evidence is still being studied.
Will this upset my stomach?
L-carnitine can cause nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and heartburn — especially at high doses. Most people tolerate typical doses well, but if your stomach is sensitive, start low and see how you feel. A fishy body odor has also been reported by some users.
Is it safe to use while I'm pregnant or nursing?
We don't have enough safety data on L-carnitine during pregnancy to say either way — talk with your doctor for personalized advice. L-carnitine is possibly safe while breastfeeding, though the data is limited. Grains of Paradise should be avoided in pregnancy, and there isn't enough information for it during breastfeeding.
What are those other amino acids in here?
They're peptide forms of branch-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) plus citrulline. These are commonly used in workout supplements, but we don't have effectiveness ratings on file for them, so we can't say what they're doing in this product specifically.
Does this have a lot of fillers?
The inactive ingredients include maltodextrin, sweeteners (sucralose and acesulfame-K), natural and artificial flavors, citric acid, malic acid, silica, and red dye. These are pretty standard for a flavored powder — there's no truly 'filler-free' supplement, but the amount here is typical for the category.
