HelloPharmacist Scorecard of BioActive Folate & Vitamin B12 by Life Extension
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has 2 active ingredients: vitamin B12 and folate. Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis; folate works alongside B12 in these processes and is especially important during pregnancy.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, and vegetable cellulose — which are fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B12 is effective for treating B12 deficiency and a rare inherited condition called Imerslund-Grasbeck disease, and it's likely effective for cyanide poisoning. It's possibly effective for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles).
We don't have effectiveness data on file for folate in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin B12 is generally very well tolerated, and your body simply excretes any excess in your urine — there's no established upper limit. The most common side effect with injections is mild irritation at the injection site; oral forms are even gentler.
Allergic reactions like rash or itching are rare but possible, and in very rare cases, correcting severe B12 deficiency can cause a dangerous drop in potassium (low blood potassium) that requires monitoring. B12 is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended amounts — in fact, you need it during both — but follow your provider's guidance on dosing.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take metformin (Glucophage) for diabetes, let your pharmacist know — metformin can lower B12 levels, so this supplement makes sense for you, but your doctor may want to monitor your B12 status. We hold no interaction data for folate, so ask us to check any other medications you're on.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a solid choice if you're B12 deficient or looking to support nerve and cell health. If you take metformin for diabetes, chat with us — your B12 levels may already be running low and you might benefit from extra attention.
