HelloPharmacist Scorecard of BioAstin 12 mg by BioAstin
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
BioAstin contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a natural pigment from algae that acts as an antioxidant in your body. The softgel also includes inactive ingredients — high oleic sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, and vitamin E — which help deliver the astaxanthin and keep the capsule stable.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin isn't established yet. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the research so far isn't solid enough to say either way. If you're thinking about using this for one of those reasons, talk with your doctor about what the latest science actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited — so we don't have decades of information yet. The most common side effects are mild: abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools (a harmless effect of the pigment itself).
A small number of people on higher doses have reported severe stomach pain. Because there isn't enough safety data, the facts advise against taking this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking BioAstin, check whether you're on any drugs metabolized by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 — astaxanthin may theoretically lower their levels. This includes many common medications, so use the search tool below to look up your prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs, and confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
BioAstin is a single-ingredient astaxanthin supplement generally well tolerated at this dose, but the effectiveness for specific conditions hasn't been proven. The main caution is that it may theoretically interact with medications your liver breaks down, though this hasn't been seen in people.
Before you start, check your exact medications with the tool on this page and confirm with your doctor or pharmacist that it's safe for you.

BioAstin 12 mg by BioAstin Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BioAstin 12 mg contains astaxanthin, a natural carotenoid that has documented interactions with medications.
The main concern is with drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — astaxanthin may theoretically lower their blood levels and reduce how well they work. This effect comes from lab research showing astaxanthin can boost CYP3A4 activity, though it hasn't been proven to happen in people yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also shows potential to affect drugs metabolized by another liver enzyme, CYP2B6, in the same way — theoretically lowering their levels. Again, this is based on lab findings and hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications. Because the effect hasn't been seen in actual patients, we can't say which of your medications are at real risk.
