Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We hold no effectiveness ratings for buchu in this product's data, so the evidence for what it does is not established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Our safety notes say buchu is generally used in food amounts, but medicinal doses lack strong safety data, and the essential oil may be irritating. Our adverse effect records are empty, which does not guarantee that side effects won't occur.
For pregnancy, the entry is rated Likely Unsafe, and our safety notes advise avoiding buchu during pregnancy because it is traditionally thought to affect the uterus. For breastfeeding, the lactation entry reads Possibly Safe, but our safety notes say there isn't enough safety information, so they advise avoiding it while breastfeeding.

Buchu Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Buchu Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra interacts with several kinds of medications through its buchu leaf extract, which is its only active ingredient.
The most serious interaction we hold is with hepatotoxic drugs (medicines that can strain the liver), rated Moderate. Buchu contains pulegone, a known liver toxin, and theoretically taking it with these drugs might increase the risk of liver damage, especially with large doses or ingested oil.
Examples include acarbose and amiodarone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Buchu may also have antiplatelet effects, so it could enhance blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs) and raise bleeding risk in some people. This is also rated Moderate, with examples including warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and heparin.
Buchu is thought to have diuretic properties, which might reduce lithium excretion and raise lithium levels, so a lithium dose may need to be lowered. This is rated Moderate too.
Altogether, these interactions span 484 individual medications.

Buchu Leaf Extract, Dry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Buchu may have antiplatelet effects. Theoretically, buchu may enhance the effects of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding in some patients. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Buchu contains pulegone, a known hepatotoxin. There is some concern that buchu may adversely affect the liver, especially when the leaf is used in large doses or the oil is ingested. Theoretically, concomitant use with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (Tricor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo)
Lithium
Buchu is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically, buchu might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
