Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • “Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (90 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.
  • “Calanus Oil” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (500 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

Calanus Oil is a 4-ingredient softgel that delivers omega-3 fatty acids and a carotenoid antioxidant. The active ingredients are eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid (the two main omega-3s found in marine sources), stearidonic acid (another omega-3), and astaxanthin (a pigment from marine algae with antioxidant properties).

The softgel itself is made from gelatin, purified water, glycerin, and sorbitol.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Astaxanthin product and its label doesn't state a use — see Astaxanthin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

Our data on astaxanthin's effectiveness shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome. The evidence hasn't yet reached the standard needed to say whether it works for these uses.

We hold no effectiveness ratings for the omega-3 fatty acids in this product within our monographs.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.

At standard doses (around 6 mg daily), a small number of trial participants experienced increased bowel movements and red stool color; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), severe stomach pain occurred in two patients. During pregnancy, there is not enough safety data, so the safety data advises against use.

The same holds true for breastfeeding—safety data is insufficient, so it's best to avoid it. If you're pregnant or nursing and thinking about this product, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Astaxanthin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 672 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Calanus Oil, double-check any drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (Moderate severity) and CYP2B6 (Moderate severity)—astaxanthin may slow their breakdown. Because we cannot check the omega-3 and stearidonic acid components, there may be additional interactions not yet documented in our data.

Use the medication checker on this page and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Calanus Oil is an omega-3 and astaxanthin blend that may appeal to you if you're interested in marine-sourced supplements. Because we can't check three of its four active ingredients for drug interactions, and because one ingredient (astaxanthin) theoretically affects how your liver metabolizes certain medications, you should check your exact medications with the tool on this page and review the results with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Calanus Oil by California Gold Nutrition: Common Questions

Does Calanus Oil by California Gold Nutrition interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Calanus Oil has a known interaction with 671 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Calanus Oil contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is astaxanthin, and what's it doing in this product?
Astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment and antioxidant found naturally in marine plants and animals. It's in Calanus Oil to add antioxidant support alongside the omega-3 fatty acids. Our data doesn't yet show enough reliable evidence that it works for specific health claims, though research is ongoing.
Can I take Calanus Oil if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, not without talking to your doctor first. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so the safety data advises against it. Your own healthcare provider can weigh the pros and cons for your specific situation.
What side effects should I watch for?
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, but some people report abdominal pain, diarrhea, or red-colored stools. At typical doses these are uncommon; at very high doses (much higher than this product), severe stomach pain has been reported in a small number of cases. Stop and call your doctor if you have severe abdominal pain.
Why can't you check three of the ingredients for drug interactions?
We don't hold interaction data for eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, or stearidonic acid in our current monographs. That doesn't mean they don't interact with anything—it means we haven't compiled that information yet. That's why checking your specific medications before you start is so important.
Is there any evidence this product works for age-related macular degeneration or cognitive decline?
Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to say whether astaxanthin works for age-related macular degeneration, cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, or any of the other uses we reviewed. Research is still ongoing, but we can't yet confirm benefit.
