What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bronson Carrot Acidophilus is a single-ingredient probiotic supplement. The active ingredient is Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live beneficial bacterium that naturally lives in your gut and may help support digestive and immune health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients including rice flour, gelatin, carrot powder, magnesium stearate, and dextrose — these are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for L. acidophilus is mixed and depends on what you're using it for. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For atopic disease (allergic conditions), the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say one way or the other.
If you're considering this for a specific health concern, your pharmacist or doctor can help you figure out whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, since it contains live, active microorganisms, there is some theoretical concern that it could cause infection in certain patients — though this is uncommon and most reported cases involved people with specific underlying conditions.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea can happen when you first start taking probiotics or when combining multiple probiotic strains, but these are uncommon. A small number of trial participants also reported rash or itching, though it's unclear whether these were caused by the probiotic itself.
Because data are limited, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or other health concerns.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, check with your pharmacist or doctor about timing. The antibiotics can reduce how well this probiotic works if you take them together, so spacing them out is important.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bronson Carrot Acidophilus is a straightforward single-ingredient probiotic that may help with certain digestive issues. If you take antibiotics, you'll want to space them apart from this supplement to keep the probiotic working.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, particularly if you have any chronic health conditions or a compromised immune system.
