Catnip Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by TerraVita
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Catnip against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Catnip by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: catnip glycerite liquid extract. A glycerite is simply an extract made using glycerin as the carrier — it's a common herbal preparation form.
The only other ingredient is glycerin itself, which is the base in which the catnip extract dissolves.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence we have doesn't establish that catnip works reliably for any condition. The product's linked monograph rates it as having insufficient reliable evidence for amenorrhea, anxiety, tension headache, upper respiratory tract infection, dyspepsia, and flatulence — the six conditions we hold data on.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means human trial evidence is either too limited, too mixed, or missing altogether to be confident either way.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Catnip is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in typical amounts — most adults using it in tea have reported no problems. However, human safety data are limited overall.
The most commonly reported side effects in the data we hold are headache, malaise (general feeling of being unwell), and vomiting. Taking large amounts may cause stomachache and vomiting; in one documented case, a toddler who ingested catnip-soaked raisins and chewed a tea bag became lethargic and entered a sleeplike state.
Catnip should be avoided during pregnancy — it may stimulate the uterus and safety has not been established. We hold no safety data for breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take lithium — catnip may increase its levels in your blood and your dose might need adjustment. Also double-check any central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, some pain or anxiety medications) before adding this product, as it may enhance their drowsy or slowing effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Catnip is generally well tolerated in typical amounts, but human safety data are limited and it's not proven effective for the conditions we've reviewed. If you take lithium or any sedative-type medication, check with your pharmacist before starting — this product may affect how those drugs work.
Pregnant people should avoid it.

Catnip by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita Catnip Glycerite Liquid Extract has documented interactions with two categories of medication.
The most serious concern is with lithium (a mood stabilizer used in bipolar disorder). Catnip appears to have diuretic properties — it increases urine output — which might reduce how much lithium your body gets rid of, potentially raising its levels in your blood to unsafe ranges.
If you take lithium, your dose may need adjustment.

Catnip also interacts with central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants) — drugs that slow brain activity like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain or anxiety medications. Taking this product alongside them may cause additive sedative effects, meaning you could feel more drowsy or impaired than expected.
Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact medications before you start.
