Chlorgen contains two active ingredients: chromium and chlorella. Chromium is a mineral your body needs in small amounts for normal metabolism and blood sugar control.
Chlorella is a single-celled green algae that's sometimes used as a nutritional supplement. The product also contains two inactive ingredients — hypromellose and ascorbyl palmitate — which are used to make and preserve the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
For chromium: the evidence shows it's likely effective for chromium deficiency, and possibly effective for diabetes. For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the data we hold shows chromium is possibly ineffective.
For chlorella: we have limited evidence on file. It's possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but for brain tumors, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, we hold insufficient evidence to rate it.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, though high or long-term doses may pose risks for some people. Most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal upset, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects like kidney or liver damage and blood clotting problems have been reported. Chlorella is generally well tolerated short term, but quality and purity vary widely between products.
Common side effects include allergic reactions, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, bloating, nausea, and light sensitivity — especially in the first two weeks. Anaphylaxis is rare but possible.
For pregnancy, chromium is rated likely safe to possibly safe in small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins, but extra supplement doses should only be taken if your doctor recommends it. Chlorella is possibly safe in pregnancy but has limited safety data, so avoid extra doses unless your doctor approves.
Limited data exists on chlorella during breastfeeding.

Chromium also has moderate interactions with diabetes drugs and insulin. Because chromium may lower blood sugar, taking it with these medications could increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
You'll want to monitor your blood sugar closely if you're on diabetes medications or insulin. Additionally, chromium can interfere with levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) absorption — it may bind to the drug in your gut and reduce how much your body absorbs, lowering its effectiveness.
Taking your levothyroxine several hours apart from this product can help. Chromium has minor interactions with NSAIDs and aspirin; these pain relievers may increase how much chromium your body absorbs.
Chlorella can interact with photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sun) by raising that risk further. It also contains vitamin K, which can interfere with warfarin — there's even a case report of warfarin therapy becoming ineffective after someone started chlorella supplements.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
