Cinnamon Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Cinnamon against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried cinnamon bark extract. It's prepared as a liquid using ethyl alcohol, distilled water, and vegetable glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that cinnamon works for the conditions listed on this product—including amenorrhea (absent periods), angina, common cold, diabetes, diarrhea, and high cholesterol (dyslipidemia). For all of these, the data available shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it either way.
If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cinnamon is generally well tolerated in the amounts we eat in food. At supplement doses—especially higher or long-term doses—the coumarin in cinnamon bark raises concerns about liver damage over time.
Food amounts are likely fine during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but avoid medicinal or concentrated supplement doses in these situations without talking to your doctor first. We also don't have enough safety data on concentrated supplement forms during breastfeeding to say either way.
In clinical trials, side effects were rare. One person developed a rash at 1 gram daily, and one person (with a known cinnamon allergy) had eyelid swelling from dietary cinnamon that cleared five days after stopping it.
One person taking 1 gram daily had a low blood sugar seizure, though it's unclear if cinnamon caused it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check any diabetes medications (your blood sugar might drop further) and any drugs that can harm the liver, especially at higher doses or over long stretches. No other interactions are documented in our data for this ingredient.

Cinnamon by Herbalist & Alchemist Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbalist & Alchemist Cinnamon is a single-ingredient liquid extract of dried cinnamon bark.
It does interact with two important medication categories, both at Moderate severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main concern is with drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs). In theory, large doses of this cinnamon product could add to that stress over time.
Cinnamon bark contains coumarin, a compound that can damage the liver in animal studies. In humans, very high doses of coumarin (50 to 7,000 mg per day) have caused liver damage that went away once the coumarin stopped.
In clinical trials, people took 360 mg to 12 grams of cinnamon daily for three months without significant changes to liver enzymes—but the safety data is limited for long-term or very high-dose use.
The second category is diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs). Cassia cinnamon may lower blood sugar on its own, so it could add to the effect of your diabetes medication.
If you're on insulin or other blood-sugar-lowering drugs, your dose might need adjustment.
Altogether, these interactions span 425 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your specific drugs before you start.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
