Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something worth pointing out about pairing cassia cinnamon with dasiglucagon (Zegalogue). While the general note in our database is that cinnamon may add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes drugs, dasiglucagon actually works in the opposite direction. It's a rescue medicine that raises your blood sugar by telling your liver to release stored sugar during a severe low. So this isn't a case where the two are working together.

In theory, since cinnamon may nudge blood sugar down, it could blunt how well dasiglucagon brings you back up, though this is based on weak evidence and food amounts of cinnamon almost certainly won't matter. If you regularly take high-dose cinnamon supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so your diabetes plan stays on track.

About Cassia Cinnamon

What is Cassia Cinnamon?

Cassia Cinnamon
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.
