Cassia Cinnamon + Carbamazepine
Carbamazepine brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv.
Cassia Cinnamon has a moderate interaction with Carbamazepine. Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Carbamazepine
Carbamazepine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Cassia Cinnamon interacts with.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with cassia cinnamon and carbamazepine (Tegretol). This one isn't about cinnamon changing your drug levels or how strong the medicine feels. Instead, it's about your liver. Carbamazepine can occasionally put stress on the liver on its own, and cassia cinnamon contains a compound called coumarin that, in large amounts taken over a long time, may do the same. Stacking two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, add up.
I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these substances behave, not on strong human studies. The amount of cinnamon you sprinkle on toast or oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Daily high-dose supplements are where I'd pause. Since carbamazepine already needs liver monitoring, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting a cinnamon supplement.

About Cassia Cinnamon
What is Cassia Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.
About Carbamazepine
What Is Carbamazepine Used For?
Brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv
Carbamazepine is used to treat certain types of seizures — including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and mixed seizure patterns. It works best for those specific seizure types; it does not appear to control absence (petit mal) seizures.
It is also prescribed to relieve the intense facial pain of trigeminal neuralgia — a nerve condition that causes sudden, severe pain along the face. It is not a general painkiller and shouldn't be used for ordinary aches and pains.
