Clove is well tolerated in food amounts but can be toxic in medicinal doses or as concentrated oil; as little as 5-10 mL of clove oil has caused serious harm in children. The liquid form here raises the risk of accidental overdose if not measured carefully.

Common topical and inhaled adverse effects include burning, contact dermatitis, and mucous membrane irritation; serious but rare effects include liver failure. Green black walnut leaf, bark, and hull contain tannins that may cause stomach upset and skin irritation, and tree nuts can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxin; medicinal amounts can cause muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and rarely acute kidney toxicity or seizures. Rooibos tea is generally safe in normal beverage amounts, though very large daily doses (10+ cups over a year) have been linked to liver dysfunction.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
