Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for Verzenio (abemaciclib): your body clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, abemaciclib could build up a bit and hit harder, meaning more of its usual side effects like diarrhea, fatigue, low blood counts, or nausea.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real patients, and a regular cup of rooibos tea is very different from a strong supplement. With a cancer medicine like this, I still wouldn't guess. Drinking the tea casually is likely fine, but please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist, especially if you're considering rooibos extracts.

About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
