Rooibos + Rifampin
Rifampin brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor.
Rooibos has a moderate interaction with Rifampin. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Rifampin
Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Rifampin and rooibos. Lab studies hint that rooibos may block an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps clear many medicines from your body. In theory, slowing that enzyme could let a drug build up a bit and act stronger. So on paper, rooibos might nudge rifampin levels up slightly, which could mean more of its usual side effects like stomach upset, nausea, or that harmless orange tint to urine, sweat, and tears.
That said, this is theoretical and comes only from test-tube research, not real patients. Casual tea drinking is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger unknown. Since rifampin is an important infection medicine, just mention any rooibos supplements to your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Rifampin
What Is Rifampin Used For?
Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor
Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.
Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.

Rifampin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Rifampin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Rooibos — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
