Rooibos + Quinidine
Quinidine brand names: Quinaglute Duratabs, Quinaglute, Duraquin, Cardioquin, Cin-Quin, and others.
Rooibos has a moderate interaction with Quinidine. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Quinidine
Quinidine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea with rooibos and quinidine. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down quinidine. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in people) suggest that strong rooibos extracts may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in the body, quinidine could clear out more slowly and build up, which might exaggerate its effects and side effects, things like nausea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, or in rarer cases changes in your heart rhythm.
That said, this is a theoretical concern from early lab work, not proven in humans. Quinidine is a finicky, narrow-margin drug, so even small shifts matter. Enjoying rooibos as a regular tea is likely fine, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated rooibos supplements.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Quinidine page
“Grapefruit belongs nowhere near quinidine. The juice blocks the main enzyme that clears this heart rhythm medicine, so quinidine levels can climb into dangerous territory, and it leads a list of 207 supplement and herbal ingredients I would treat with real seriousness, 15 of them rated major.”

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Quinidine
What Is Quinidine Used For?
Brand names: Quinaglute Duratabs, Quinaglute, Duraquin, Cardioquin, Cin-Quin, Quinora, Lin-Qin, Quinova, Quinidex Extentabs
Quinidine is used to treat certain abnormal heart rhythms. It can help restore normal rhythm in symptomatic atrial fibrillation/flutter, and it can lengthen the time between episodes in some high-risk patients. It is also used for recurrent, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias such as sustained ventricular tachycardia.
Quinidine Sulfate tablets are also approved to treat life-threatening Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The Quinidine Gluconate extended-release tablet label does not list this use.
