Aripiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2D6 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and aripiprazole (Abilify). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break aripiprazole down and clear it out. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) hint that a concentrated rooibos extract may slow this enzyme a bit. If that happened in real life, aripiprazole could build up slightly and its effects, plus side effects like drowsiness, restlessness, dizziness, or stomach upset, could feel a little stronger.

That said, this is theoretical and based on early lab work, not human studies. Sipping rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. I'd be more cautious with concentrated rooibos supplements. If you use those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aripiprazole (Abilify) out of your system. In lab dish studies, concentrated rooibos extract slowed this enzyme down. If that happened in people, aripiprazole could clear a bit slower and build up, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness (feeling like you can't sit still), dizziness, or mild shakiness.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patients. Drinking rooibos as a regular tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. The bigger question would be concentrated rooibos extract capsules. If you're considering those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change your aripiprazole on your own.

Aripiprazole treats several mental health conditions. It is approved for schizophrenia, acute manic and mixed episodes of Bipolar I Disorder, and as an add-on to antidepressants for Major Depressive Disorder.
