Nortriptyline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear nortriptyline. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, nortriptyline could build up slightly and its effects could feel stronger. That might mean more of the usual tricyclic side effects, like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, blurry vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not human studies. A cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated rooibos extracts or notice new symptoms, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Here's the gist with nortriptyline and rooibos. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear nortriptyline out. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) suggest rooibos may slow that enzyme down a bit. Nortriptyline is approved to relieve symptoms of depression. This applies to nortriptyline hydrochloride capsules, nortriptyline hydrochloride oral solution, and Pamelor capsules — all used for the same core indication.

The label notes that depression arising from within the body (endogenous depression) may respond better than other types of depression, though all of these products are indicated for the broader relief of depressive symptoms.
