Quetiapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2D6 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and quetiapine. Your body uses several liver enzymes to clear quetiapine, and one of them is called CYP2D6. In a lab dish, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down a bit. In theory, slowing it could let a little more quetiapine linger in your system, which might nudge up its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling lightheaded when you stand.

That said, this is very weak evidence (test-tube only, not real people), and CYP2D6 is only a minor pathway for quetiapine, so a cup or two of rooibos tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are a bigger question mark. If you take those regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down quetiapine. In test tube studies, a concentrated extract of rooibos appeared to slow that enzyme down. If that were to happen in people, your body might clear quetiapine a little more slowly, letting more of it build up. With quetiapine, that could mean stronger sedation, more dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

Here is the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real human cases, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very different from a concentrated supplement. Drinking it as a beverage is unlikely to cause trouble. If you plan to use rooibos extracts or capsules, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Quetiapine

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
