Glyburide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C9 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and glyburide. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear glyburide. Lab tests (using a concentrated rooibos extract, not the tea) suggest rooibos might slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, glyburide could hang around longer and work harder than expected, which mainly raises the chance of low blood sugar. Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, or sudden hunger.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube studies, and a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplement extracts are the bigger question mark. If you go that route, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
