Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus Drug Interactions: The Bottom Line

From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated August 2026

Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a harmful, clinically significant Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus drug interaction appears low for most people, because the one real concern works against the supplement rather than your medications. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and every one of them reflects a single moderate concern involving antibiotics.

Interactions deserving the most attention

The only interaction that stands out involves antibiotics. Because Lactiplantibacillus pentosus supplements usually contain live bacteria, taking an antibiotic at the same time can kill many of those organisms, which may make the probiotic less effective. This does not make the antibiotic less effective or more dangerous, so the main downside is losing some of the benefit you are paying for.

What the rest of the list means

Although the number of interacting medications looks large, it simply reflects this one antibiotic effect applied across many individual drugs. The concern is theoretical, based on how antibiotics work against bacteria in general, and it points toward reduced probiotic benefit rather than any harm to you or a change in how your medicines work.

What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

Lactiplantibacillus pentosus is a 'friendly' probiotic bacterium found in many fermented foods and used in some supplements for gut and immune health. Research is still early, so it is not proven to treat any specific condition. It is generally considered safe for healthy adults, but people with weakened immune systems or serious illness should talk to a doctor first.

Overview

Lactiplantibacillus pentosus (formerly called Lactobacillus pentosus) is a type of lactic acid bacteria. It is part of the same group of "friendly" microbes that includes many common probiotics. It is found naturally in fermented foods such as olives, pickled vegetables, and some plant-based ferments, where it helps with the fermentation process.

Because it is found in fermented foods and the human gut, some companies include this strain in probiotic supplements. People take it hoping to support digestion, the gut microbiome, and immune health.

It is important to know that probiotic effects can be very strain-specific. Results seen with one strain do not automatically apply to another, even within the same species.

How it works

Like other lactic acid bacteria, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus ferments sugars and produces lactic acid. This can lower the pH in its environment, which may make it harder for some unwanted bacteria to grow.

Researchers have suggested several possible ways probiotic strains like this one might help: competing with harmful microbes, supporting the gut lining, and interacting with the immune system. Some laboratory and animal studies have looked at these effects.

It is important to remember that these mechanisms are proposed and largely based on lab and animal research. They do not prove that taking the supplement produces meaningful health benefits in people.

Safety & precautions

For most healthy adults, probiotic lactic acid bacteria are generally considered safe and have a long history of being consumed in fermented foods.

However, people who are seriously ill, have weakened immune systems (for example from chemotherapy or certain medications), have central venous catheters, or are critically ill or premature infants should be cautious. In rare cases, live bacteria have caused infections in these vulnerable groups. These individuals should only use probiotics under medical supervision.

For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is not enough specific safety data on this strain. To be cautious, talk with your doctor before using a supplement during these times. Eating fermented foods is generally considered a normal part of the diet, but supplements are more concentrated and less studied.

Side effects

The most commonly reported side effects of probiotics are mild and digestive, such as gas, bloating, or changes in bowel habits. These often ease as your body adjusts.

Serious side effects are rare. In people with weakened immune systems or serious underlying illness, there have been rare reports of infections linked to probiotic bacteria. If you develop fever, severe stomach pain, or signs of infection while taking a probiotic, stop and seek medical care.

Reports by condition
Sepsis Immunologic

Since Lactiplantibacillus pentosus preparations contain live and active microorganisms, there is some concern that they might cause pathogenic infection in some patients. Some lactobacilli species have been isolated in cases of bacteremia, sepsis, splenic abscess, endocarditis, necrotizing fasciitis, pancreatic necrosis, and meningoencephalitis. Most of these cases are thought to be due to the translocation of bacteria from other locations in the body in which they occur naturally, such as the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, and not to dietary or supplemental intake.

Dosing

There is no established standard dose for Lactiplantibacillus pentosus. Probiotic products are usually measured in colony-forming units (CFU), and the amount can vary widely between products.

The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label. Because doses and strains differ, and because quality control varies between supplements, it is a good idea to choose a reputable brand and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

People use Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus for a range of reasons, but according to the Natural Medicines database the current clinical evidence is insufficient to confirm it works for the specific conditions it has been studied for. See the graded list on this page, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it for any condition.
Does Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus interact with prescription medications?
Yes. We list 182 medications with a known interaction with Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus. Use the checker above to see how Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus interacts with a specific drug.
How are Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus interactions rated?
Each interaction is graded major, moderate, or minor based on how clinically significant it is and the strength of the evidence behind it. Major interactions are the most serious and are best avoided, or used only under close professional supervision.
Is it safe to take Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus with my medications?
It depends on the specific medication. Some combinations are fine, while others call for monitoring, timing changes, or should be avoided. Check your exact drug above and confirm with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing anything.
Where does this Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus interaction information come from?
Our interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database — an evidence-graded reference for vitamins, herbs, and supplements — and is reviewed by licensed HelloPharmacist pharmacists, who may add clinical context.
What is Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus used for?
It is a probiotic bacterium most commonly used for general gut and digestive health and immune support, and as a culture for fermenting foods. Human evidence for specific health benefits is still limited.
Is Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus safe to take?
It is generally well tolerated by healthy adults, but people with weakened immune systems or serious illness should check with a doctor first, since live bacteria can rarely cause infections in vulnerable people.
Can I take it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
There is not enough specific safety data for this strain during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is best to talk with your doctor before using a supplement.
Is this the same as Lactobacillus plantarum?
No, they are different species, though both are closely related lactic acid bacteria in the same family. Probiotic effects are often strain-specific, so they should not be assumed to act the same way.
