Theoretically, taking Lactiplantibacillus pentosus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. pentosus.
Lactiplantibacillus pentosus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. pentosus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction runs in one direction, and it works against the probiotic, not your Rifampin. Rifampin is a powerful antibiotic, and it doesn't tell friendly bacteria apart from the harmful ones. So if you swallow your Lactiplantibacillus pentosus capsule at the same time as Rifampin, the antibiotic may simply kill off a good chunk of those live organisms before they can do anything useful. Your TB or meningitis treatment still works fine. You're just wasting the probiotic.

The easy fix most pharmacists suggest is spacing them out by at least two hours. This is based on how these products behave rather than hard clinical studies, so it's a sensible precaution, not an alarm. Still, run your routine by your pharmacist.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
