Oritavancin Diphosphate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Pentosus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactiplantibacillus pentosus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. pentosus.
Lactiplantibacillus pentosus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. pentosus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: oritavancin (Orbactiv or Kimyrsa) is a powerful antibiotic given as an IV infusion, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that probiotics like Lactiplantibacillus pentosus are themselves live, friendly bacteria. So the antibiotic can't really tell the difference and may wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic organisms you just took. That means it's the probiotic that loses its punch here, not the antibiotic. Your oritavancin will still work fine against your skin infection.

This concern is theoretical, based on how these products behave rather than hard studies. If you want the probiotic to survive, the usual tip is to space it at least two hours from antibiotic dosing. A quick word with your pharmacist can confirm timing for your situation.

What Is Oritavancin Injection Used For?

Oritavancin injection — available as Orbactiv and Kimyrsa — is used to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in adults. These are serious skin infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), several Streptococcus species, and vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis.

This antibiotic should only be used when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected. Using it unnecessarily can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
